Kitesurfing Urlaub auf Tobago

Kiteboading on Tobago

The Caribbean is increasingly a popular destination for kiteboarding (a.k.a. Kitesurfing) Tobago is one of the few kiteboarding areas in the world where you will find top conditions without overcrowding the spot. Shallow water, good waves and a relaxed lifestyle off the beaten track invite you to relax and kite between sessions.

We show you what you can expect on a kitesurfing holiday in the Caribbean on Tobago.

Best travel time for kiteboarding on Tobago

Tobago is part of the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean. The dry season lasts from the beginning of December to the end of May. Small rain showers are also possible during this time and provide some refreshment. Don’t be irritated by the number of rainy days in climate tables – rain showers lasting 15 minutes or longer are already included in the meteorological statistics as “rainy days”. Meanwhile, the air hardly cools down, so that the temperatures remain at a constant 30°C – even outside the dry season. The water is perfectly tempered with 26-28°C anyway.

In the particularly dry period from February to March the relative humidity is about 74%. Heavy storms are extremely rare on Tobago, as the island lies outside the hurricane belt. You can find out more about the climate on Tobago here.

Conditions in the region

The best known and most popular area for kitesurfing on Tobago is about 3.3 km² and is located at the headland Pigeon Point. A special feature is the location at the long bay, which is shielded by reefs. Since there are no currents worth mentioning, the danger of being aborted is virtually non-existent.

As you probably know, the Passat is not always constant in this region of the Caribbean. On average you can count on 4-5 Bft. The gusty wind in the front area mostly comes from east/north-east over land over land. The wind becomes the more constant and stronger the further you head upwind.

The interaction of thermal and solar radiation strengthens the wind, which can fluctuate especially on cloudy days. At the station and around it there are many possibilities to bridge this time during a short break with or without snacks. The white sandy beach and the view to the sea as well as the lagoon of Bon Accord offer anyway a perfect panorama. Especially beautiful: No matter from which direction the wind comes – you will never find choppy waves here!

Near the shallowly sloping bank there is in windward like leeward the standing area, thus at the entrance. On the other side of the extensive spot it changes into the reefs of the peninsula No Man´s Land. In between you have 2.5 km x 1.3 km to let off steam. The water is crystal clear everywhere and offers a clear view of the ground.

Especially kiters who are not yet able to walk at altitude should book a course with boat training in advance. The light currents to the outside near the channel require appropriate skills.

The Kiteboarding Station at Pigeon Point

The English-speaking team of “Radical Sports Tobago” is now a permanent fixture at Pigeon Point. The station is modern, offers storage facilities, compressor use, water for material washing and rental equipment. The on-site service is rounded off by shower, toilet, rescue equipment and kite courses for all skill levels (boat training). If you need rental equipment, please remember to book well in advance.

At the station you can also rent SUP and kayaks to bring some variety to your stay. Particularly interesting are the “Bioluminescence Tours” offered on selected evenings. Here you explore with SUP or kayak in a guided group the self-luminous plankton in the nearby Bon Accord lagoon.

Also outside the station there are many possibilities to do sports on Tobago, e.g. on the mountainbike.

Diving on Tobago with Richie

Unlike many other islands in the Caribbean, Tobago offers an attractive selection of interesting diving spots. The location between the Caribbean and the Atlantic Ocean also provides variety and a diverse underwater world.

“Richie” Louis – a great guide for beginners and advanced

As occasional divers we were looking for a calm and reliable guide. Through Alibaba we got the tip to contact Richie.

Richard Louis (Richie) is a diving instructor and owner of the diving school “Wild Turtle Scuba Tobago Ltd” on Tobago.

Richie has worked in the diving business for the last 20 years and has got to know the reefs and the water around the island. That’s why he can offer the best dives possible on Tobago.

If required Richie can also organise the journey to the dive spot so that you can explore all the worthwhile places without renting a car.

The rental equipment and the organization of the dives are perfect for us. His patience inspired us as much as his relaxed and likeable manner.

Payment for multiple dives can be finalized with a credit card at the Rex Turtle Beach Hotel’s base.

Example prices: (incl. bottle, weights & boat)

1 dive: US$50.00

Sea to Sea Marathon

Sea to Sea Marathon TobagoSea to Sea Marathon auf Tobago in der Karibik. Bild (C) Pixabay

With the “Sea to Sea Marathon” one of the most beautiful marathon runs in the world takes place every year. With a panoramic view of the Caribbean, Atlantic and rainforest, variety is guaranteed!

The start takes place near the “Bloody Bay” at the Caribbean and leads first through the rain forest “Main Ridge Forest Reserve” to Roxborough at the Atlantic Ocean. From there we take the “Windward Road” along the Atlantic coast through small villages with a fantastic view of the sea and the nature of the island towards Scarborough. The final destination is Lambeau Beach.

Runs over 5 and 10 kilometres and a half marathon are also offered. The finish is also in Lambeau Beach.

The timing is chip-based and AIMS/IAAF certified. The start of the marathon already takes place at 6 o’clock in the morning, so that a too strong heat stress is avoided.

The event is therefore interesting both for recreational athletes and for ambitious (half) professionals. We will be happy to help you find and organize your travel and accommodation!

In 2019, the event will take place on May 18 (5 and 10 kilometers) and May 19 (half marathon and marathon).
